The Maw

Running from the Sea of Jewels to the open ocean, “The Maw” is a treacherous strait with jagged craggy shores. Although dangerous, because of it’s quick access to the center of the continent it sees many trade vessels, risking their lives to transport goods. The gamble certainly pays off as interior cities crave exotic luxuries from afar and pay handsomely for them. Many trading companies have grown an order of magnitude from a single delivery through the Maw, while others have destroyed their life’s work when a shipment is dashed upon the rocks.

The Maw’s depths are full of rocky outcroppings narrowing as one goes deeper down into an inky darkness. Locals say that it has no bottom, but this has yet to be proven.

Winds of Fortune Race

Every three years the famous Winds of Fortune Race is held from one end of the maw to the other. It takes between three days to a week depending on the weather, and during a time of the year when the currents are the most unpredictable.

The race is one of the few shared customs of the two warring nations, the People of Rah and the Kingdom of Zai. While the People of Rah fund the venture, the Kingdom of Zai holds the lavish ceremonies in honor of their god.

The starting and finish line are chosen randomly depending on the outcome of a religious ceremony held by Zai. Famous sailors from far and wide join the race for world-wide glory and fame, but due to the perils of the strait many will perish attempting the feat. The prize varies from race to race, and is always a unique artifact worth a king’s ransom.
