The Great Catastrophe

At some point a great catastrophe occurred on the continent, creating a large inland sea named the Sea of Jewels for it’s many glimmering lights which shine from it’s watery depths. Over millenia, a great crack formed beginning at the bay and began to creep southwest across the continent, spewing steam and great poisonous clouds as the waters of the sea poured into it. The crack has reached the outer ocean now and has formed a treacherous straight known as The Maw by the locals.

Religious War

At present, the nations are fighting a religious war against one another.

The kingdom of Zai seems to worship a great beast they believe lives in the Sea of Jewels, whom they see as a bringer of the apocalypse. They view the peoples of Rah as rejecting the inevitable and bringing down the beast’s wrath on the entire continent.

The People of Rah have accepted the new gods and see Zai as a relic of the past which needs to be cleansed of their sin. As with most previously isolated continents who encounter the vastness of the known world, the People of Rah have now begun engaging in trade with other nations. As a result, they seek the riches beneath the Sea of Jewels as a commodity that will help raise their nation to the world stage.
